Joseph Aboki is a Ph.D candidate from the Membrane Research Group in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. His research is focused on the development of mechanically stable and highly conductive triptycene-containing multiblock copolymer membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Joseph did his undergraduate in chemical engineering at MIT during which he was actively involved in undergraduate research/internships in areas ranging from the synthesis of iron-oxide nanoparticles for drug delivery to cancer cells – in the Langer Lab – to the development of advanced PEMs for hydrogen fuel cells in the Hammond Lab. After graduating from MIT, he spent one year teaching Math/computer programming in Nigeria before coming to Notre Dame. In his leisure, Joseph enjoys playing soccer and table tennis, as well as travelling, camping and multi-player online gaming.
Qinnan Zhang is a third year Ph.D student in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering department at the University of Notre Dame. Her research area is mainly polymer-based gas separation membranes, with a focus on the preparation and characterization of mixed matrix membranes. She received her Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2014.
Aaron joined the Guo lab in the Fall of 2014. Aaron is co-advised by Dr. Ruilan Guo and Dr. Wiliam Philliip. Aaron's research focus is on the development of new polymer technologies for improved nanofiltration membranes. While purification of drinking water drives innovation in nanofiltration membranes, Aaron's work explores the utility of a range of polymer technologies with the potential to meet needs for of both drinking water filtration applications and value-added separations in other industries.
Aaron earned his Bachelors degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Spring Arbor University in 2009. Before starting graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, he spent four years working at BASF in Wyandotte, MI where his work focused on polymer synthesis and development for a range of topics centered around polymeric films. At BASF Aaron developed an understanding of polymer fundamentals and developed basic research skills and gained a passion for laboratory safety that he brings with him to Notre Dame.
Outside of the lab Aaron enjoys hiking, gardening, traveling to exotic places and he dabbles in cheese making.
